报告摘要:

Emerging microbial contaminants are an evolving problem in today’s world, sometimes with devastating impacts on humans, ecosystems and even the economy. In this talk, I will discuss three recent challenges, i.e. the COVID-19 pandemic, antimicrobial resistance and harmful algal blooms, and how we are addressing these problems through the systematic study of 1) developing sensitive and accurate methods of detection of target microbes, 2) determining their occurrence and prevalence in environmental waters, 3) understanding their behaviour and fate in the environment and 4) establishing the risks presented to humans and ecosystems via modelling.

报告人简介:

Dr Karina Gin is a Professor with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, National University of Singapore. She received her Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Melbourne in 1988 and M.Eng Degree from the National University in Singapore in 1991. She obtained her Doctor of Science (ScD) Degree jointly from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in 1996. Her research specialisation is in the area of water quality and ecosystem processes, with particular interest in understanding the fate and transport of emerging microbial and chemical contaminants of concern including antimicrobial resistance in the urban water cycle and harmful algal blooms in tropical waters. Professor Gin received the National Public Administration Medal (Bronze) (COVID-19) from the Prime Minister’s Office (2023) and the Dean’s Chair Award from the Faculty of Engineering, NUS (2017-2019). She is co-author of a book on The Environment in Asia Pacific Harbours which received a UN Atlas of the Ocean award (2006) and is also a co-recipient of the Technology Enterprise Challenge (TEC) Innovator Award (2005). She is an Associate Editor of Environment Innovation & Technology (since Dec 2021) and Editorial board member of Journal of Hazardous Materials.
