At the beginning of the seminar, Mr. Chen Shuiming, the Director of Human Resources Department of the Huawei Legal Department, introduced the history of the Huawei Legal Department to students. The students were amazed that the Huawei Legal Department developed to a big and strong division within 25 years. With Huawei on the precipice of joining the Fortune Global 500 companies, its Legal Department has established legal and intellectual property teams in 13 overseas regions, employed more than 700 lawyers and patent engineers, conducted litigation, disputes resolution, and arbitration in more than 170 countries and regions around the world, participated in the formulation of IP standards by international organizations, and established routine communications with national government agencies. As this magnificent picture of the rise of Chinese private enterprises unfolded, the students were full of national pride besides their own yearning and longing.

The main speaker, Mr. Guo Li shared his insights into legal work from his own professional experience as a lawyer. Since joining Huawei in 2010, he has served as senior lawyer and legal director in many overseas regions and is the current director of Huawei Legal Department of Comprehensive Business. He has rich experience in disputes and legal proceedings in major international cases, in-depth and accurate system interpretation and case explanation. When it comes to the complaints in intellectual property between Huawei and Motorola, Mr. Guo mentioned the story behind the lawsuit. He and his team selected and analyzed from the countless precedents and rules, prepared adequately, and confidently won the international litigation. This fight is one of the few encouraging victories that Chinese enterprises have won in international intellectual property and patent lawsuits.

Given the vivid and interesting case explanation by Mr. Guo, the students started a heated discussion on how to choose the appropriate dispute resolution mechanism in international litigation. Mr. Guo summarized and commented on each student’s speech, and compared the similarities and differences between overseas litigation and overseas arbitration in terms of time cost, economic cost, environment, accessible remedies, and enforceability. He encouraged everyone to place themselves in the position of an in-house lawyer rather than as a student on campus to consider the various factors of dispute resolution. Mr. Guo’s interpretation on the responsibilities of in-house lawyers benefited the students in attendance.

In the Q&A session, Mr. Guo and the students discussed the current controversial “996” working mode. He mentioned that Huawei has always adhered to the concept of “employee-oriented, struggle-oriented”. In this environment, he managed to balance work and life and reached a win-win situation.

This seminar made the students understand the discovery and dilemma in the global business of a Fortune Global 500 company. They fully understood Huawei’s concepts of “going towards globalization is going towards the rule of law” and “legal obedience and global compliance”. The seminar provided valuable information and guidance for students’ future career choices.
